The Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC) partnered with NMSD on the Orchard Revitalization Project on the NMSD Santa Fe campus throughout the summer. The crew’s focus in the orchard was to build a more accessible space for the community, while preserving its history, and managing its natural resources.

The Rocky Mountain Youth Corps ASL crew consisted of six NMSD students and one NMSD alumni. The project provided vital life and work skills training including first aid certification, tool safety, independent living, team-building, and self-care. The group laid down weed protection, installed drip irrigation systems, and laid out a path edger that run along the orchard. Using xeriscaping, drought friendly grasses, plants, and flowers were installed in the plant bed under the marquee on the corner of Saint Francis Drive and Cerrillos Road.

RMYC envisions a world where all generations support one another, where young adults actively respond and adapt to an ever-changing environment, inspiring local and global communities to reach their full potential in the 21st century. According to NMSD Coordinator of Transition Services Jesse Woosley, the impact on youth and the community with the Orchard Revitalization has been very positive. “We truly hope to continue building on partnerships like the one we have with RMYC that provide our youth with valuable work and training experiences which can directly impact their post-secondary outcomes,” concluded Woosley.
